When I was a little girl I remember…

My childhood home sat on a street with a curve in it. We were not allowed to run and meet our dad who was returning from work until he rounded the curve and we could see him.

Later I could walk the length of Qualicum Drive, turn left onto Scarborough Street, a short distance to the alley and straight on to the back of our school.

Qualicum means ‘where the dog salmon run’ in the Pentlach language. In the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, there was a group of about 3000 indigenous people called the Pentlach people. There is now one person trying to retrieve the language of the Pentlach people. The language went extinct in 1930.
